Ghee Quality Alert: 10 Batches Banned in J&K!

In Jammu and Kashmir, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has taken decisive action by prohibiting the sale, storage, distribution, and display of ten identified ghee batches. This regulatory measure was implemented after laboratory analyses confirmed that these batches did not meet required quality standards, with tests identifying foreign vegetable fat and other deviations.
The affected ghee batches were found to contain beta-sitosterol, a marker for foreign vegetable fat, and failed the Baudouin test. Ghee, by definition, must be exclusively derived from milk or milk products, and the inclusion of non-milk fats is strictly prohibited under food safety regulations.
The J&K FDA order, issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, resulted from sample collections across various districts, including Anantnag, Samba, Kathua, and Jammu. Consumers purchasing ghee are advised to meticulously check the FSSAI license number, ingredient list, batch number, manufacturing or packing date, and expiry date. Additionally, inspecting the integrity of the packaging for any signs of tampering is crucial.
