Jharkhand Slashes Maternal Deaths with Unique 'Saas-Bahu' Meetings
2 Apr
Summary
- Jharkhand's MMR drops to 54, significantly below national target of 70.
- Innovative 'Saas-Bahu-Pati' meetings educate families on health.
- 'Pahal Kits' distributed to newly married couples for family planning.

Jharkhand has achieved a significant reduction in its maternal mortality rate (MMR), lowering it to 54 per 100,000 live births as of the 2021-23 period. This figure notably outperforms the national average of 80 and surpasses the sustainable development goal target of 70 by 2030. The state's infant mortality rate (IMR) also stands at 25-27 deaths per 1000 live births, aligning with national rates.
These impressive results are attributed to unique community-based initiatives. 'Saas-Bahu-Pati' meetings, organized under the National Health Mission, foster discussions on family planning and maternal/child health among key family members. Additionally, the recent launch of 'Nayee Pahal Kits' aims to educate newly married couples on birth spacing and healthy family practices, with health workers distributing these kits door-to-door.
Analysis of maternal deaths reveals postpartum hemorrhage, high blood pressure, and sepsis as primary causes. To combat this, officials have instructed comprehensive verbal autopsies for every maternal death. Focus is also being placed on ensuring cent percent institutional deliveries and providing specialized training for labor room nurses, addressing causes of infant mortality such as sepsis and breathing problems.
