Jharkhand Medical Colleges Get Major Upgrade

The state health department has approved substantial expansions for the Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College in Dhanbad and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College in Jamshedpur. In Dhanbad, the MBBS student intake will rise from 100 to 250, necessitating upgrades to academic, clinical, and support services. A new 450-bed hospital building will be constructed, and existing facilities will be renovated.
Further improvements include enhanced medical infrastructure, new hostels compliant with National Medical Commission standards, and better sports facilities. The project, estimated at Rs 700 crore, also involves connecting existing hospital campuses via a ramp for improved accessibility. These plans were finalized in a review meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh.
The Jamshedpur institution will also undergo significant expansion, offering 250 undergraduate, 150 postgraduate, and 30 superspecialty seats. Concurrently, a modern health bhawan is planned for the MGMMCH campus in Doranda, consolidating departmental offices at an estimated cost of Rs 131 crore.
