HIV Blood Scandal: Jharkhand HC Demands Action Report
9 Apr
Summary
- Five minor thalassaemia patients received HIV-positive blood.
- Jharkhand High Court demands detailed report on erring officers.
- Blood bank operated with an expired license since 2008.

The Jharkhand High Court is demanding a detailed report from the state government regarding actions against medical officers implicated in transfusing HIV-positive blood to five minor thalassaemia patients at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital.
The division bench, led by Justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay, issued the directive after hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a special investigation into the incident. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the government's response, noting the severe danger posed to the children's future due to the contaminated blood transfusion.
An FIR was filed on February 6 against the hospital's medical officers deemed responsible for the alleged transfusion, which occurred on various dates in August and September 2025. The children began showing symptoms of contracting the virus thereafter.
An earlier inquiry by a five-member medical team uncovered substantial irregularities at the Sadar Hospital's blood bank, including its operation despite a license that expired in 2008. The court stressed that those responsible for such negligence should face severe legal repercussions. The next hearing is scheduled for April 21.
