Preparations are underway in Jharkhand to significantly enhance cancer care services across the state. The health department plans to establish cancer daycare and radiation centers at six key locations, with all five medical colleges included in this expansion. These new facilities are expected to operate primarily through a public-private partnership model.
The initiative's core objective is to make vital cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, more accessible to patients. By bringing these services closer to home, the department aims to reduce the burden of travel to distant cities for necessary medical care.
Senior health officials have begun assessing the necessary infrastructure, equipment, manpower, and funding at medical colleges and district hospitals. Discussions have highlighted the need for modern linear accelerator machines and specialized personnel like radiation specialists and radio physicists, with a shortage of the latter identified as a challenge.
The proposed radiation centers will be strategically divided into two groups: one comprising Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, and Dumka, and the other including Ranchi, Hazaribag, and Palamu. Plans also involve establishing a central command center at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) for monitoring and potentially expanding PET scan facilities in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad under the PPP model.
An implementation committee, led by the additional secretary-cum-executive director of Jharkhand State Aarogya Society, will oversee the entire process, from proposal preparation and resource assessment to tendering and operational finalization.
