Jersey Hospital has successfully restored normal operations following significant disruption caused by extreme heat in May. Record temperatures, reaching 34.2C (93.6F), compromised the hospital's air conditioning machinery, leading to the temporary closure of three of its seven operating theatres.
Medical Director Simon West stated that all urgent patient cases were addressed promptly in early June using interim solutions, ensuring no extended waiting times. However, 83 patients scheduled for routine, non-urgent procedures were affected and have since been contacted and rescheduled with new dates.
The hospital has replaced the damaged chilled water unit and confirmed that both urgent and planned surgical procedures are now proceeding as normal. West expressed confidence in the measures taken to ensure patient safety and minimize disruption, emphasizing the swift recovery of services.
Recognizing that older facilities can be vulnerable during extreme weather, the hospital is developing a long-term solution to prevent future occurrences. They extended gratitude to the public for their patience and understanding during the period of disruption.
