Jersey Food Rules Get Major Overhaul by 2026

Jersey is set to implement substantial changes to its food regulation framework starting October 2026. The proposed new rules are designed to modernize existing food safety legislation, placing a strong emphasis on the health and well-being of consumers. Environment Minister Steve Luce highlighted the initiative's aim to bring food safety laws up to date.

The draft regulations were subject to a public consultation that spanned ten weeks during the summer period. This process engaged both residents and food businesses, resulting in 129 distinct responses. A key focus of the consultation was allergen labelling, with strong support expressed for mandatory legal requirements to safeguard individuals with food allergies.

These forthcoming regulations promise a more robust approach to food safety on the island. The focus on allergen information aims to provide greater clarity and protection for those affected by food sensitivities.
