Jaw Surgery Journey: From Pain to Recovery
2 Mar
Summary
- Winnipeg man endured years of pain and inability to eat solid food.
- Surgery to replace fused jaw joint was eventually performed in Saskatchewan.
- Manitoba now offers temporomandibular joint replacements to patients.
A Winnipeg resident has completed a multi-year medical journey, culminating in a successful jaw surgery performed in Saskatchewan two months ago. The patient suffered for five years with a fused jaw joint, which prevented him from eating solid foods and caused constant pain. Initial attempts to treat the condition in Manitoba involved replacing the joint with rib bone, but this also fused, severely limiting his mouth's opening capacity.
Frustrated by the prolonged wait and lack of specialized care in his home province, he eventually connected with a surgeon in Saskatchewan. This led to a series of four procedures, with the final one occurring in December. The surgeon noted the complexity of the case and the challenges of operating on previously operated sites. He also highlighted that only a few Canadian specialists can perform such procedures, leading many Manitoba patients to seek treatment elsewhere.
In a positive development, Manitoba Health announced in January that surgeons in the province are now able to perform temporomandibular joint replacements. While three patients are still receiving treatment out-of-province, there are no outstanding referrals or waitlists through the provincial program. This initiative aims to improve access to specialized jaw disorder treatments within Manitoba.
