Jaundice Death Sparks Fear in Himachal Village

A 28-year-old engineering graduate's suspected death from jaundice in Gohar sub-division, Mandi district, has led to intensified containment efforts by the district administration. The deceased, Udit Sharma of Leoti village, died late Friday night while undergoing treatment, marking the first jaundice-related fatality in the area this year and causing significant public alarm. As of Saturday evening, the Bagsyad health block has reported 67 confirmed cases of jaundice.

Health officials are conducting door-to-door surveys to identify new cases, with four to five symptomatic patients arriving daily at Gohar Civil Hospital. The administration has established a special jaundice ward at the hospital. Following a review meeting, officials inspected drinking water sources, finding and removing sludge from a water tank. Investigations are also underway to determine if drains flowing into the Jyuni stream are contaminated, possibly by a dead animal.

In response to the growing concern, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate directed the water resources department to ensure regular cleaning and chlorination of water sources. The public has been advised to consume boiled water, maintain personal hygiene, and seek medical attention promptly if jaundice symptoms manifest. Samples of drinking water have been collected for quality testing.
