22 May
Summary
- Japanese eating patterns can be grouped into four distinct types.
- Men and younger individuals often skip breakfast on days off.
- Women tend to snack more and have lighter dinners, study finds.

A comprehensive study by a University of Tokyo team has categorized Japanese eating patterns into four distinct types. Researchers analyzed data from 1,047 individuals across 26 prefectures over 11 days, focusing on meal timing and frequency.
The four identified meal rhythms include: "early, large breakfast on workdays," "skipping breakfast on non-workdays," "frequent snacking with small dinner," and "early last eating with large lunch."
Analysis revealed that men and younger people commonly fall into the "skipping breakfast on non-workdays" category. Women were more frequently associated with the "frequent snacking with small dinner" pattern. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition on May 11, provides a detailed understanding of diverse meal rhythms in Japan.
