Security at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur is undergoing a significant transformation. By the close of 2026, the facility plans to transition its security personnel, replacing 120 home guards with ex-servicemen.
This strategic shift is designed to cultivate a more trained and disciplined security presence, ensuring a quicker response to incidents. The overhaul is particularly focused on managing crowds and ensuring safety in high-pressure zones such as the emergency, casualty, and ward areas.
The hospital administration acknowledged repeated campus disturbances, including arguments following patient deaths and concerns over patient safety and ward access. Ex-servicemen are anticipated to bolster crowd control, monitor wards, regulate access at gates and elevators, and intervene swiftly during emergencies.
Hospital superintendent Dr. Balram Jha emphasized the need for a rapid response mechanism. The introduction of the new security system will occur in phases to prevent disruption to daily hospital operations, with a detailed deployment plan to be finalized post-administrative approval.
