- 345 people infected across 27 states, 36 hospitalized.
- Recall issued for jalapenos from a specific grower in Sinaloa.

Health authorities in the United States are investigating a significant Salmonella outbreak spanning 27 states, which has sickened 345 individuals. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified jalapeno peppers from Mexico as the source of the contamination. This outbreak has led to 36 hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported as of August 6, 2026.
The investigation traced the contaminated jalapenos to a common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, with distribution in the U.S. handled by Coast Citrus Distributors. In response, the company has agreed to recall all remaining affected product and is notifying its customers. Restaurants including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA were identified as recipients of these potentially contaminated jalapenos.
Chipotle Mexican Grill switched its jalapeno suppliers starting July 20, 2026, while QDOBA ceased using and serving jalapenos on July 28, 2026. The FDA has stated that there is no longer an ongoing risk to consumers from these specific establishments in relation to this outbreak.
