Rabies Scare: Family Tests Negative, Dog Bites Rise
31 Jan
Summary
- Family of seven initially showed rabies-like symptoms but tested negative.
- Symptoms subsided, and children played with the dog that had bitten them.
- Ludhiana reported over 31,000 dog bite cases in 2024.

A family of seven from Jagraon, initially alarming health officials with rabies-like symptoms, has been cleared of the infection. The family, including children and relatives, was tested at PGIMER, Chandigarh, after showing symptoms like hypersalivation and difficulty speaking.
Laboratory results confirmed that the family does not have rabies. They have since returned home, with follow-up visits by health officials confirming their well-being. Notably, the children were seen interacting with the puppy that had bitten one of them days prior, with no residual symptoms observed.
This false alarm was handled with caution by health authorities due to the typically fatal nature of rabies once symptoms appear. Ludhiana Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur suggested that other factors, such as food poisoning, might have caused the initial symptoms.
