6 Mar
Summary
- Free fluoride varnish is being provided to young children on the Isle of Man.
- The program aims to reduce tooth decay rates and future strain on dental services.
- The initiative includes a six-month application of varnish and toothbrushing education.

A new public health program is rolling out free fluoride varnish treatments to all primary school children on the Isle of Man. The 'Smile of Mann' initiative, which commenced recently, aims to significantly improve children's oral health across the island. Pupils at Ballaugh Primary School were among the first to receive this preventative care. Public Health Consultant Dr. Ross Keat highlighted that fluoride varnish can reverse early signs of tooth decay and reduce the risk of future dental problems, thereby lessening the demand on dental services as children grow older.
The program targets higher-than-average tooth decay rates previously identified among the island's children compared to their UK counterparts. This effort complements an existing supervised toothbrushing program designed to instill lifelong oral hygiene practices. Data collected by the Public Health Directorate will be used to assess the program's effectiveness. Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine expressed delight at the comprehensive rollout, emphasizing its potential to reduce toothaches and hospitalizations for dental extractions, marking a positive step for the island's public health.
