Rodent droppings shut down Irish school meals provider
17 Oct
Summary
- Rodent droppings found on ovens, food-contact materials, and cupboards.
- The Lunch Bag, an Irish school meals provider, received a closure order.
- The closure was due to breaches of food safety legislation in September.

A significant food safety breach led to the closure of The Lunch Bag, an Irish school meals provider. Health officials issued a closure order in September after discovering rodent droppings on ovens, food-contact materials, and within cupboards. The premises, equipment, and bathrooms were found to be unclean, with dead insects also noted.
The severe findings posed a grave risk to public health, as packaging and open foodstuffs were exposed to contamination. This could render the food unfit for consumption or injurious to health. The closure order applied to all of The Lunch Bag's food business activities in Timahoe and Portlaoise.
This incident was one of twelve closure orders served by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in September. Other businesses across Wexford, Limerick, Dublin, Cavan, Laois, Clare, and Kerry also faced orders for various food safety violations, including active rat infestations.
