Air Purifiers Can't Fight Hidden Indoor Pollution
31 Oct
Summary
- Indoor pollution persists due to continuous pollutant generation.
- Cooking, incense, and cleaning products are major sources.
- Purifier effectiveness depends on size, filter, and placement.
Indoor air quality can remain compromised despite the constant operation of air purifiers. This is because numerous household activities consistently generate pollutants, often at a rate exceeding the purifier's capacity to remove them. These ongoing sources of contamination mean that indoor air may not become significantly cleaner, even with a purifier in use.
The effectiveness of an air purifier is not absolute; it depends on several critical factors. These include the device's size relative to the room, the condition of its filters, the volume of airflow it generates, and its strategic placement within the living space. A unit that is undersized, has clogged filters, or is poorly positioned can severely limit its ability to purify the air adequately.
Commonly overlooked sources contributing to indoor pollution include cooking, especially frying and grilling, which releases particulate matter and gases like nitrogen dioxide. The burning of incense sticks, scented candles, and mosquito coils also adds particulate matter to the air. Furthermore, many household cleaning products and air fresheners emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. Outdoor pollution can also infiltrate homes through open windows and doors, exacerbating indoor air quality issues.
Dr. Rahul Sharma, Director of Pulmonology at Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, emphasizes that air purifiers primarily capture existing particles but do not prevent the generation of new pollutants. He advises controlling pollution at its source through measures like using kitchen exhaust systems, limiting indoor smoking, reducing incense and candle use, careful handling of household chemicals, and proper purifier maintenance. Maintaining adequate ventilation while closing windows during high outdoor pollution is also key.
