Thousands Ill: Free Lunch Program Falters in Indonesia

Over the past three days, a concerning number of approximately 2,000 students and teachers across Indonesia have experienced food poisoning linked to the government's free school meals program. In a recent incident at a high school in Rembang, Central Java, 777 individuals, including 752 students and 25 teachers, became unwell after consuming meals provided by the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program. Symptoms reported included diarrhea, overwhelming toilet facilities, and some requiring hospitalization.

This situation has cast a shadow over President Prabowo Subianto's signature policy, which aims to enhance the nutrition of Indonesian schoolchildren. The multibillion-dollar scheme has been marred by allegations of corruption and criticism regarding its substantial cost. Similar outbreaks have been reported, with 730 people falling ill at an Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, and hundreds more affected in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, with concerns raised about food quality, including slimy chicken and undercooked items. Investigations are underway, with food samples being tested for contamination, and assurances have been given that medical costs will be covered.
