Indonesia Declares Polio Outbreak Over After 3-Year Fight

The World Health Organization has officially declared Indonesia's polio outbreak concluded, marking a significant public health triumph. This declaration comes after almost three years of dedicated response initiatives that saw nearly 60 million additional polio vaccine doses administered to children across the nation.

The outbreak, which first emerged in Aceh province due to low immunization rates and environmental factors, spread to several other provinces. Public health campaigns faced challenges, including disinformation about vaccines and competition with COVID-19 vaccination drives. However, sustained efforts, including mass immunization and information campaigns, led to the final confirmed case being detected in South Papua in June 2024.

Health officials are now focused on maintaining this achievement by strengthening routine immunizations and enhancing surveillance systems.
