Summary
- Family demands accountability for alleged denied medical care.
- Young Indigenous woman died weeks before her 25th birthday.
- Investigation launched into critical incident at Saskatoon hospital.
A community walk was held to mourn Jaali Sutherland-Weenie, a young Indigenous woman who died in a Saskatoon hospital due to a severe pregnancy complication. Her family believes her death, which occurred just weeks before her 25th birthday, was preventable and a result of inadequate medical care. They are demanding accountability from the healthcare system rather than blaming individual staff.
Sutherland-Weenie, from Beardy's & Okemasis Cree Nation, was 36 weeks pregnant when she experienced severe symptoms and was transferred to Saskatoon. Despite being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, her family states she was left in an observation room for approximately 14 hours before her condition worsened. She died less than two hours after being moved to a labor and delivery room on April 26, though her newborn daughter survived. The Saskatchewan Health Authority has confirmed it is investigating the incident as a critical incident, a standard procedure for maternal deaths during labor or delivery.
