India Tackles TB: 25% Global Burden, But Progress Accelerates
25 Mar
Summary
- India faces nearly a quarter of global TB cases, with millions still undetected.
- TB incidence and deaths significantly declined between 2015 and 2024.
- An AI-enabled app and a 100-day campaign target hidden TB cases.

India accounts for approximately 25% of the global tuberculosis burden, highlighting the persistent scale of this infectious disease challenge. Despite millions of infections remaining undetected, the country is experiencing a notable decline in TB cases and fatalities. Between 2015 and 2024, TB incidence dropped by 21%, and deaths reduced by 25%.
Union health minister J P Nadda stated that India is on track to eliminate TB ahead of global targets. This progress is fueled by a "jan bhagidari" approach and intensified case-finding efforts. Over 26 lakh TB cases were notified in 2024, the highest ever, with treatment success rates improving to around 90%.
To further combat the disease, an AI-enabled TB Mukt Bharat app has been launched to enhance access to care. A 100-day intensified campaign is also underway, targeting villages and urban wards to screen populations and detect hidden cases, including asymptomatic ones. These efforts aim to significantly reduce the number of undetected cases.
Despite advancements, TB remains linked to poverty and vulnerable populations. Drug-resistant TB continues to be a concern, with over 55,000 cases reported in 2024. Stigma and lack of awareness still prevent many from seeking care, leading to delayed diagnosis. Comprehensive community outreach and technological integration are key to overcoming these remaining gaps.
