India's public health system has achieved a landmark success, with 50,373 public health facilities across all states and Union Territories certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) by December 31, 2025. This significant advancement underscores the government's dedication to ensuring quality, safety, and patient-centered care for all citizens.
The NQAS initiative, which began in 2015 with only 10 certified facilities, has systematically expanded its framework to cover various levels of public healthcare. The introduction of virtual assessments dramatically accelerated this growth, with certified facilities increasing from 22,786 in December 2024 to the current total.
This milestone is crucial for India's goal of Universal Health Coverage, aiming to provide affordable and quality healthcare without financial hardship. The government remains committed to sustaining and expanding NQAS certifications, setting an interim goal of certifying at least 50% of public healthcare facilities by March 2026.
