India Launches National Digital Drug Database
1 Jul
Summary
- National digital database provides standard medicine identity.
- Registry ensures consistent drug information across healthcare.
- It currently lists over 1.23 lakh branded medicines.

A new national digital Drug Registry was launched on Monday, aiming to standardize medicine information throughout India's healthcare system. This initiative, part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, provides a unique digital identity for all drugs, ensuring hospitals, doctors, and pharmacies access the same verified data.
The registry was developed to combat the long-standing issue of inconsistent drug naming and formatting across various health systems. This data standardization is expected to significantly improve clinical decision-making and support e-prescriptions.
Created in partnership with CDSCO and NRCeS, the platform utilizes international standards like SNOMED CT for seamless interoperability. It currently holds information on over 1.23 lakh branded medicines, 10,000 generic drugs, and 29,000 substances, searchable by generic name, brand name, or substance.
This Drug Registry is the fourth core registry under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It is designed for integration with various health information systems, including Hospital Management Information Systems and e-prescription platforms, through open APIs.
