Doctors' National ID: Practice Anywhere in India!
19 Aug
Summary
- Doctors will get a Unique ID for practicing nationwide.
- Registration aims for a unified portal by NMC.
- State councils maintain primary disciplinary jurisdiction.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a new registration system that would enable medical practitioners to practice across India with a single Unique Identification (UID) number. This proposal, part of the draft Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, aims to simplify inter-state practice. Once registered with a State Medical Council and allotted a UID in the National Medical Register (NMR), doctors would no longer require fresh registrations for other states.
The unified system would operate through an NMC Ethics and Medical Registration Board portal, with State Medical Councils continuing to issue registrations and licenses. These approvals would be synchronized between state and national registers, with the NMR serving as a central repository for registration details and disciplinary actions. The draft also addresses foreign medical graduates and extends temporary registration duration for postgraduate courses.
License validity remains five years, with inactive status applied for non-renewal within three months of expiry, reflected automatically in the NMR. Disciplinary jurisdiction primarily stays with the State Medical Council where the misconduct occurred. An appeal mechanism is also included, allowing applicants to appeal rejections to the Ethics and Medical Registration Board within 30 days.
