India's Silent Heart Attack Culprits: 5 Diet Mistakes
13 Mar
Summary
- Indian CVDs strike a decade earlier than Western populations.
- Five dietary mistakes silently damage hearts from within.
- Insulin resistance and inflammation are key drivers of heart disease.

Cardiovascular diseases affect Indians a decade earlier than in Western populations, with high mortality rates and early onset. Experts point to everyday dietary choices as significant contributors to this trend, often leading to silent damage from within.
Dr. Brijmohan Arora, a diabetologist from New Delhi, highlighted five major dietary errors contributing to heart attacks. These problematic foods are seed oils, ultra-processed items, sugary beverages, refined grains like white flour products, and processed meats. Their consumption can silently promote insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, visceral fat accumulation, and arterial damage.
Scientific evidence strongly links overall dietary patterns to cardiovascular disease. High intake of processed meats and refined carbohydrates, rich in saturated fats and sodium, rapidly spikes blood sugar. While occasional consumption of items like seed oils in moderation might be acceptable, repeated reheating or inclusion in ultra-processed foods increases risk, especially alongside a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, or obesity.
Insulin resistance and chronic inflammation are identified as central to modern heart disease. Elevated blood glucose and insulin damage blood vessels, accelerating atherosclerosis, while inflammation destabilizes arterial plaques. Fortunately, these factors are modifiable through dietary improvements such as reducing sugars, limiting processed foods, increasing fiber, and incorporating healthy fats. Regular physical activity and adequate sleep further enhance these benefits.
