No New H1N1 Strain in India, ICMR Assures

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a clarification stating that no novel strain of Influenza A (H1N1) has been detected within India. This announcement aims to allay public concerns regarding the ongoing seasonal influenza virus circulation. The H1N1 pdm09 viruses currently circulating are akin to the A/Missouri/11/2025 strain, belonging to clade 6B.1A.5a2a and subclade D.3.1.1, which have been present since 2025.
ICMR scientists further confirmed that the prevailing influenza strains in the country show good compatibility with the vaccine strains recommended for the Northern Hemisphere. Seasonal influenza, including H1N1, is typically self-limiting, with common symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches usually resolving with rest and care. However, individuals such as young children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions face a greater risk of developing complications.
Public health measures are being actively implemented, and the situation is under continuous surveillance. This clarification follows a health review meeting chaired by Union Health Minister JP Nadda to assess Delhi's preparedness for seasonal and vector-borne diseases. Delhi's Health Minister reported on the capital's readiness, including sufficient hospital beds, medical staff, and equipment, assuring timely treatment for all patients.
