Food Labels Get a Makeover: India Proposes Warning Labels
23 Sep
Summary
- India's food regulator proposes single-phase front-of-pack nutrition labelling.
- New labels will warn consumers about sugar, salt, and saturated fat.
- A voluntary 365-day implementation period is proposed for businesses.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed a single-phase implementation of front-of-pack nutrition labelling for packaged foods. This move, conveyed to the Supreme Court on September 23, 2026, aims to inform consumers about sugar, salt, and saturated fat content.
FSSAI requested four months to draft and finalize regulations, which will include a 60-day public consultation. Subsequently, food businesses will be given a voluntary 365-day period to comply with the new labelling requirements.
The proposed label is a red hexagon with a white background, reminiscent of Canada's system. Products containing non-caloric sweeteners will also carry a specific warning. This initiative addresses concerns raised by the Supreme Court regarding the absence of such warning labels.
