24 Mar
Summary
- First Indian allowed passive euthanasia died after 13 years.
- Supreme Court permitted withdrawal of life support in March.
- Family sold their home for his decade-long medical treatment.

The life of Harish Rana, India's first individual granted passive euthanasia, concluded on Tuesday at AIIMS Delhi after a 13-year battle with his condition. Rana had been in a coma since 2013 after a fall during his university studies.
Earlier this month, a Supreme Court order permitted the withdrawal of his life support. This decision followed medical experts' conclusions that his condition was irreversible, allowing for a dignified natural death with continued palliative care.
Harish's family, including his parents Ashok and Nirmala Devi, demonstrated immense dedication, reportedly selling their home to fund his extensive medical treatments over the past decade.
Neighbors and community members recalled the family's commitment, with prayers and rituals, including those from the Brahma Kumaris, held for Harish's peaceful passing. The cremation was scheduled for Wednesday morning in south Delhi.
