Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are significantly bolstering India's efforts in combating cancer, particularly through enhanced screening and early detection programs. Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted these initiatives on World Cancer Day, emphasizing the critical role of timely diagnosis and accessible treatment.
Recent data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) indicates a substantial cancer burden, with over 15.3 lakh new cases and approximately 8.7 lakh deaths reported in India in 2024. Globally, the figures were even higher, with 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022.
In a move to improve affordability, the government has waived customs duty on 17 cancer drugs, a measure welcomed by health experts. This, alongside the establishment of cancer day care units in districts and new cancer institutes, aims to strengthen the healthcare system. The focus remains on early detection, prompt referral, and cost-effective treatment, with an eye towards public-private collaboration.
