India Launches Network to Combat Birth Defects
1 Mar
Summary
- New network aims to unify efforts against birth defects.
- India contributes 16% of global birth defect deaths.
- Many babies with defects miss timely, available care.

India faces a substantial public health challenge with birth defects, contributing to 16% of global deaths from these conditions annually. Recognizing this, a new national collective, the Birth Anomalies Network of India (BIND), is set to launch in New Delhi. This initiative aims to unify fragmented efforts by medical institutions, civil society, and patient groups to address birth defects as an urgent public health issue.
BIND's objectives include promoting newborn screening, developing a national registry, and empowering caregivers with evidence-based information. Despite the availability of free treatment at District Early Intervention Centres, a critical shortage of care and low awareness hinder timely intervention. Congenital heart defects are a leading cause of death, with many other conditions like clubfoot and spina bifida also causing lifelong disability and distress.
Systemic changes are crucial, including increased specialist care and rehabilitation therapies. Government programs like the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) fund treatment, and 430 District Early Intervention Centres have been established. However, ensuring that no child is left behind requires overcoming stigma and improving access to the essential, often lifelong, care needed for conditions ranging from cleft lip to Down syndrome.
