India Intensifies TB Fight with AI & 100-Day Push
24 Mar
Summary
- AI-enabled X-ray devices expedite TB detection.
- New campaign targets high-risk groups for screening.
- Nutrition support aims for faster disbursement.

India has initiated a focused 100-day campaign to bolster its fight against tuberculosis, aiming to compensate for pandemic-related delays in its national program. This initiative involves widespread screening across 1.58 lakh high-risk villages and among vulnerable populations such as individuals with HIV, diabetes, smokers, and those in urban slums or informal labor sectors.
Utilizing approximately 2,000 AI-enabled handheld X-ray devices, the campaign facilitates rapid TB detection, a significant increase from the 510 machines used previously. For individuals not diagnosed with active TB, a skin test will identify latent infections, leading to preventive treatment. Personalized care includes SMS reminders for medication and support, alongside a chatbot app for queries.
Furthermore, the government is expediting the Rs 1,000 monthly nutrition support to within 15 days of diagnosis. This aims to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, as delays have previously hampered the program's effectiveness. In 2024, India recorded an estimated 27.1 lakh TB cases and over 3 lakh deaths, highlighting the ongoing challenge.
