Heroin Addiction: India Struggles to Reach Patients

In 1981, India began producing buprenorphine, a crucial medicine for heroin addiction. However, four decades later, access to this treatment remains a significant hurdle. Many individuals requiring help for opioids, harmful alcohol use, or tobacco struggle to find timely treatment.

Approximately 54,000 individuals were on opioid substitution therapy in 2023-24, a tiny percentage of the estimated 77 lakh needing such care. Global health targets suggest a much higher coverage rate. The Indian government's roadmap to triple de-addiction centers to 1,751 by 2029 is a positive move. Like the successful expansion of TB treatment, addiction care requires comparable political commitment and substantial public funding. A collaborative approach between government hospitals and private partners is essential to bridge the treatment gap and ensure that life-saving medicines reach those in need.
