India Launches Seven-Minute Cancer Injection
17 May
Summary
- New seven-minute injection treats non-small cell lung cancer.
- Tecentriq injection uses atezolizumab to block PD-L1 protein.
- High cost remains a significant barrier for many patients.

India has significantly advanced cancer care with the introduction of Tecentriq, a seven-minute injection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. This novel subcutaneous treatment, developed by Roche Pharma India, dramatically reduces administration time compared to traditional intravenous infusions.
The injection employs atezolizumab to target and block the PD-L1 protein, which cancer cells use to evade the immune system. By inhibiting PD-L1, the drug enhances the body's natural defense against cancer cells, proving particularly effective for patients with high PD-L1 levels.
Doctors anticipate that this faster, more convenient treatment will improve patient comfort and compliance. However, the high price of approximately Rs 3.7 lakh per dose, with many patients requiring multiple doses, poses a substantial financial burden.
To mitigate costs, Roche offers a patient assistance program, and the drug is included under the Central Government Health Scheme. Despite affordability concerns, the injection is hailed as a major medical breakthrough, improving quality of life for cancer patients in India.
