India's Youth Mental Health Crisis Revealed
27 Feb
Summary
- Indian youth mental health quotient is 33, ranking 60th globally.
- Older adults in India scored 96 on MHQ, showing a generational gap.
- Family bonds, diet, and early smartphone use impact youth mental health.

A recent Global Mind Health 2025 report highlights a critical mental health disparity in India, with young adults (18-34) scoring a low 33 on the Mind Health Quotient (MHQ), placing them 60th worldwide. This score starkly contrasts with older adults (55+), who achieved an MHQ of 96.
The MHQ assesses cognitive, emotional, social, and physical capacities crucial for navigating life. Experts suggest the youth's low scores indicate a decline in core mental attributes like resilience and emotional regulation, rather than just temporary stress.
Several factors contribute to this trend among Indian youth. Weakened family bonds are evident, with only 64% of young adults reporting close family ties compared to 78% of older adults. Additionally, high consumption of ultra-processed foods (44%) and early smartphone use, with an average first use at 16.5 years, are linked to adverse effects on brain health and attention spans.
These findings underscore a concerning public health issue for India. Addressing this crisis requires enhanced support systems, public awareness campaigns, promotion of healthier lifestyles, and improved mental health services to prevent a deeper societal impact.
