Launched in 2018 and enhanced in 2024, the Nikshay Poshan Yojana aims to provide ₹1,000 monthly to TB patients. However, many in Andhra Pradesh, like Sandhya, have not received payments for six months or more, hindering their ability to afford nutritious food, a vital component of TB treatment.
The Ni-kshay Mitra initiative, encouraging public donations of nutritional kits, has also faced challenges. Donor fatigue and difficulties in securing contributions have reduced its effectiveness, leaving patients without essential nutritional support.
Health officials attribute payment delays to digital hurdles, including the creation of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs and linking patient details. These processes can take up to a week in remote areas, with only about 30% of patients successfully registered due to network issues.
Experts stress that timely financial and nutritional support is as critical as medication for TB patients. Improving social conditions, ensuring adequate nutrition, and breaking transmission chains are vital to achieving India's TB elimination goals by 2035.
