Student suicides in India reached an unprecedented 14,488 cases in 2024. This figure represents a 4.3% increase from 13,892 in the preceding year, even as the country's overall suicide rate saw a minor dip. Over the past five years, student suicides have surged by 15.7%.
Experts identify academic pressure, severe competition, and parental expectations as key triggers. They emphasize that many students battle undiagnosed depression and anxiety, underscoring the critical need for early identification and stigma-free mental health support. The proportion of student suicides within total cases has also steadily increased.
In 2024, male students accounted for 7,669 suicides, while female students represented 6,819. Maharashtra reported the highest proportion at 13.2%, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. A significant percentage of these tragic incidents involved students educated up to the secondary level.
Family problems were cited as the leading cause for all suicides in 2024, constituting 33.5% of cases. Illness and addiction also contributed significantly, though failure in examinations accounted for a smaller percentage.
