Institutional deliveries in India have advanced to 90.6% in the 2023-24 period, marking a steady increase from previous years and signifying progress towards universal coverage. This data comes from the National Family Health Survey-6, released recently.
The survey highlights that 95.9% of pregnant women received antenatal care (ANC). Of these, the proportion receiving ANC within the first trimester rose to 76.2%, indicating earlier engagement with healthcare services. Furthermore, mothers receiving at least four ANC visits increased to 65.2%.
Improvements were also observed in maternal nutrition, with a greater percentage of mothers consuming iron folic acid supplements for extended periods during pregnancy. The health ministry attributes these gains to strengthened public health infrastructure and focused implementation of various national health initiatives.
