Summary
- India's food regulator issued notices to popular beverage brands.
- Brands are accused of misbranding and making misleading claims.
- FSSAI stated such functional claims are not permissible for food.

The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently issued notices to prominent beverage brands that market themselves as 'energy drinks.' These companies are accused of misbranding and making misleading claims about their products.
FSSAI, the nation's apex food regulator, clarified that product naming conventions or labeling systems are not intended for the 'energy drink' category. Furthermore, the authority stated that functional or therapeutic claims, such as 'stimulates mind' or 'energizes body,' are impermissible for food items under the FSS Act 2006.
Concerns exist that some beverages marketed as energy drinks may not meet regulatory standards or might make exaggerated claims. Many of these drinks contain high levels of caffeine and sugar, potentially leading to adverse side effects like rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
Experts suggest that no beverage can genuinely create energy or permanently enhance focus. While caffeine and sugar offer temporary alertness, they are not substitutes for healthy lifestyle habits. Healthier alternatives include water, coconut water, and smoothies without added sugar, alongside balanced nutrition and sufficient sleep.
