India Revamps Anemia Fight with New Guidelines
28 Jun
Summary
- New guidelines expand Anaemia Mukt Bharat strategy.
- Focus shifts to diet and digital tracking of beneficiaries.
- Programme now includes low birth weight babies as a key group.

On June 29, 2026, India's Union Health Ministry will unveil enhanced operational guidelines for the Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. This revised framework transitions the national programme to a stronger "Abhiyaan" (campaign) model, introducing a seventh beneficiary group: low birth weight babies (0-6 months), underscoring early intervention. It also incorporates a seventh intervention focused on "eating right" to promote iron-rich diets and strengthens monitoring through digital tracking, marking a significant evolution from the previous 6x6x6 strategy to a 7x7x7 framework.
The updated guidelines introduce a T4 strategy: Test, Treat, Talk, and Track, replacing the former T3 approach. This holistic method emphasizes routine haemoglobin testing, adherence to national treatment protocols, systematic beneficiary follow-up, and essential nutritional counselling. For severe cases among pregnant and lactating women, intravenous iron therapy is recommended. The Ministry is also implementing an integrated digital ecosystem, with various portals converging into a unified AMB Abhiyaan Portal for effective monitoring and planning.
Anaemia remains a critical public health issue in India, with significant percentages of children, women, and adolescent girls affected, as per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5). The condition impairs cognitive development, productivity, and maternal health. The Ministry acknowledges that anaemia's causes are multifaceted, including nutritional deficiencies, infections, and inherited disorders, necessitating this comprehensive, life-cycle approach for prevention and treatment.
