TB Drug Fears Quashed: Ministry Clarifies Treatment
26 Apr
Summary
- Social media claims about TB drug regimen changes are false.
- The standard six-month DS-TB treatment remains unchanged.
- A new four-drug HPMZ regimen is still under evaluation.

The Central TB Division of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a clarification addressing misinformation circulating on social media. These false claims suggested a change in the treatment regimen for drug-susceptible tuberculosis (DS-TB).
Specifically, messages indicating a shift to a 4HPMZ protocol (isoniazid, rifampicin, moxifloxacin, pyrazinamide) are incorrect. This four-drug combination is being studied to potentially shorten TB treatment duration but has not been approved for general use in India.
The established six-month treatment regimen, known as 2HRZE/4HRE, remains the current standard of care under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). This decision was made after consultations with national experts.
Authorities are advising all stakeholders, including state TB teams and medical professionals, to adhere strictly to existing national guidelines. They emphasize relying solely on official government channels for accurate information to prevent confusion and safeguard patient care.
