Metabolic Disease Crisis Grips India and China
5 Mar
Summary
- India and China lead Asia-Pacific in absolute metabolic disease burden.
- Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity are major concerns.
- Urgent integrated prevention strategies, including diet and exercise, are called for.

India and China carry the highest absolute metabolic disease burdens in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a recent review of GBD data up to 2023. The analysis, published in Metabolism, examined disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and mortality for key metabolic conditions.
In 2023, India surpassed China in DALYs for Type 2 diabetes and continues to face significant burdens from high systolic blood pressure. High BMI, LDL cholesterol, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are also rising steadily in both nations, with the gap between them narrowing.
Researchers predict these metabolic risks will continue increasing until 2030. They urge immediate, integrated prevention strategies, including regulating ultra-processed foods, implementing clear nutrition labeling, and reducing unhealthy components in common foods.
Furthermore, redesigning cities for physical activity and integrating large-scale screening for metabolic diseases into primary healthcare are crucial. These comprehensive measures are vital to identify and treat high-risk individuals early and mitigate the growing health crisis.
