The Union government has introduced the Operational Guidelines on National Ambulance Services (NAS), 2026, establishing national standards for ambulance services. These guidelines, released on Monday, aim to standardize ambulance deployment, staffing, equipment, and monitoring to improve emergency medical transport throughout the country.
The framework focuses on enhancing pre-hospital emergency care through uniform operational standards. It details norms for ambulance categorization, deployment based on population, human resource needs, equipment and medicine standards, and performance monitoring. The objective is to ensure quality, accessibility, efficiency, and responsiveness of ambulance services for timely patient stabilization and referral.
A significant aspect involves establishing Integrated Command and Dispatch Centres (ICDCs) with GPS tracking and real-time dashboards. These centers will facilitate better coordination with the unified emergency response number 112. Compliance with AIS-125 standards for ambulances and enhanced training for Emergency Medical Technicians are also mandated.
Furthermore, the guidelines propose GIS-enabled mapping of health facilities and accident-prone areas to optimize patient transport to appropriate healthcare facilities. Scientific deployment strategies based on call volumes, accident hotspots, and traffic conditions will ensure efficient resource utilization and improved response times.
