Steps Boost Brain Power: Study Finds Link
29 Oct
Summary
- Increased daily steps linked to better attention and decision-making.
- Controlled blood pressure also associated with improved cognitive function.
- Study analyzed 14 years of Fitbit data from over 3,000 participants.

A comprehensive 14-year study analyzed Fitbit data from over 3,000 participants, revealing a notable link between increased daily step counts and improved cognitive functions. Individuals who incrementally boosted their steps showed better performance in attention and self-control tasks. The research, conducted by Baylor College of Medicine, involved participants aged 18 to 93.
Beyond physical activity, the study also highlighted the importance of blood pressure control. Lower systolic blood pressure was independently associated with better scores on impulsivity and self-control tests. Higher physical activity levels were also linked to lower blood pressure, suggesting a multi-faceted approach to brain health.
While the study found correlations, researchers cautioned that causality could not be definitively established. Experts suggest sustained physical activity supports brain health by maintaining cardiovascular health, managing conditions like high blood pressure, and potentially supporting neuroplasticity through growth factors.
Consistency in exercise is key, with general recommendations including 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly. Finding enjoyable and feasible activities is advised, alongside other brain-supporting factors like sleep, social engagement, and mental stimulation.
