Director Dr. Sameer Vohra emphasized that while Illinois generally has high vaccination rates, certain areas experience lower coverage, putting residents at elevated risk. In Douglas County, 96.8% of school children were vaccinated against measles last school year, meeting the state's goal of 95%.
Measles is highly contagious, spreading through airborne droplets from coughs or sneezes, or direct contact with infected secretions. The MMR vaccine is highly effective, with one dose offering 93% protection and two doses providing 97% protection. The state health department is working with local officials to manage the outbreak.
Nationally, measles cases have seen a significant comeback. As of August 27, 2026, the CDC reported 2,903 confirmed cases, the largest number in decades. Approximately 94% of these cases were among unvaccinated individuals. States like Utah and South Carolina have reported particularly high numbers of cases this year.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has reaffirmed its support for the American Academy of Pediatrics' immunization schedule, advocating for two doses of the MMR vaccine for all children.
