Thyroid Hormones Linked to Dark Personality Traits
3 Feb
Summary
- Hyperthyroidism shows higher psychopathy, sadism, and Machiavellianism.
- Elevated thyroid hormones may foster antagonism and reduce empathy.
- Findings could aid early identification of antisocial behavior risks.

New research suggests a significant connection between an overactive thyroid and dark personality traits, including psychopathy.
The study, conducted by psychologists at Ashkelon Academic College, involved 154 adults. Participants with diagnosed hyperthyroidism showed elevated scores for psychopathy, sadism, and Machiavellianism.
These findings indicate that hormonal imbalances, specifically high levels of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, may influence aversive personality characteristics. This hyper-aroused state associated with hyperthyroidism can lead to emotional instability and impulsive behavior.
