Athlete's Fight Against Lung Cancer: A Wife's Plea
6 Aug
Summary
- A fit athlete was diagnosed with stage four small-cell lung cancer.
- He advocated for lung cancer screening before his death.
- His widow seeks greater awareness and improved treatments.

Julie Kelly is urging for greater action regarding lung cancer diagnosis and treatment following the death of her husband, Sean. Sean, a 59-year-old elite athlete, was diagnosed with stage four small-cell lung cancer in February 2025 after experiencing breathing difficulties. He sadly passed away in November 2025, nine months after his diagnosis, despite undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy.
Sean, who represented England in running races and supported charities, became an advocate for lung cancer screening. Before his death, he spoke at 10 Downing Street, emphasizing the importance of early detection. His wife, Julie, is determined to continue his legacy by raising awareness and supporting research into new treatments.
An encouraging development is the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence's final guidance recommending serplulimab with carboplatin and etoposide for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer. This treatment, an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, is estimated to benefit around 1,150 people in England and Wales.
