HPV Triumphs: Cancer Pioneer's Legacy
10 Aug
Summary
- Pioneering research linked HPV to oropharyngeal cancers.
- Cancers previously attributed to smoking and alcohol.
- Gillison's work led to improved cancer treatment outcomes.

Dr. Maura Gillison, a trailblazing medical oncologist and molecular epidemiologist, dramatically shifted the understanding of head and neck cancers. She was the first to definitively link the human papillomavirus (HPV) to oropharyngeal cancers, challenging the century-old consensus that smoking and excessive alcohol were the sole culprits.
Her research, particularly a 2007 paper in The New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrated that HPV caused cancers of the throat, tonsils, and base of tongue. This discovery distinguished them from mouth cancers primarily linked to lifestyle factors.
Gillison's work influenced a new staging system for oropharyngeal cancer. It also spurred clinical trials for less toxic treatments, significantly improving patient outcomes and survival rates. She passed away on June 21, 2026, at age 61 from a rare small intestine cancer.
Her findings were initially controversial but ultimately validated, leading to the expansion of HPV vaccine approval for preventing these cancers. Gillison advocated for vaccinating both sons and daughters against HPV, a virus linked to rising cancer rates.
