Temporary Units Open After Major Hospital Fire Damage
16 Apr
Summary
- Temporary endoscopy units opened following a February electrical fire.
- New mobile units will serve patients until repairs are completed by 2028.
- Over 500 patients were safely evacuated during the major blaze.

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) has taken a significant step in its recovery by opening temporary endoscopy facilities after an electrical fire severely damaged its unit in February. Two new mobile endoscopy units are now in operation and will remain in place until 2028, providing essential services while repairs are undertaken.
Further facilities are also being established, with three additional mobile units set to open in June at Adanac Park. This expansion aims to resume vital diagnostic tests for patients. The fire, which began early on February 1st, necessitated the evacuation of over 500 patients. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than four hours.
While no injuries were reported, the fire caused damage to several wards, leading to postponed operations and appointments being relocated. Emergency, inpatient, and therapeutic endoscopies continue in repurposed rooms. The hospital still faces a shortage of 140 beds due to ongoing disruptions and parts of its West Wing being out of action.
