Hospital Parking Fines Issued While Patient Fought For Life
2 Sep
Summary
- A critically ill patient received four parking fines while hospitalized.
- Father paid for permits but fines were still issued by APCOA.
- NHS and parking company apologized and canceled the charges.

A woman, aged 36, who has been receiving treatment at Hull Royal Infirmary since March, was issued four parking fines while in intensive care. Her father had been paying for weekly parking permits for her car, yet the penalties were still sent between June 28 and August 13. The parking company, APCOA, initially refused to discuss the matter with the father, insisting on speaking only to the registered owner, who was critically ill.
The patient suffers from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and was admitted with suspected intestinal failure, having experienced several life-threatening complications. Her father described the situation as intolerable, particularly as he tried to shield his daughter from the stress of the fines. He emphasized the inappropriateness of expecting a seriously ill person to handle such appeals.
In response to the incident, the NHS Humber Health Partnership and APCOA issued a joint apology. They acknowledged that the usual appeal process was not followed and confirmed that the parking charges have been cancelled, expressing regret for any distress caused to the patient and her family during this difficult time.
