Congress Extends Vital Hospital-at-Home Program

Congress has overwhelmingly passed the bipartisan Hospital Inpatient Services Modernization Act, ensuring the continuation of the Acute Hospital Care at Home (AHCAH) program for another five years, through 2030. This crucial legislation, introduced by Representative Vern Buchanan, extends a successful model that permits Medicare-certified hospitals to deliver inpatient-level care within patients' residences. The program leverages remote monitoring, telehealth, and in-home nursing to facilitate recovery outside traditional hospital settings.

Since its inception in 2020, the AHCAH initiative has expanded to include over 400 hospitals across 39 states. Reports indicate significant benefits, such as reduced mortality rates, fewer hospital admissions, and higher patient satisfaction. This approach is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and those managing chronic illnesses, offering a cost-effective and high-quality alternative to inpatient stays. The new act also mandates a comprehensive study by CMS to evaluate program quality, costs, and patient demographics.

With strong bipartisan support, the bill now proceeds to the Senate for consideration.
