Dance for Health classes are bringing joy and unexpected upliftment to hospital wards at Bedford Hospital. Initially a pilot on two older patient wards, the program has been so successful it's been extended and is now a 30-week initiative. Future plans include offering these classes to children and cancer patients.
Run by Sadie Hunt and Jenny Howells, the classes focus on movement that aids physical therapy while improving mood and well-being. Patients and staff have reported significant positive impacts, including reduced pain, increased mobility, and a more relaxed atmosphere on the wards. The initiative aims to shift the hospital environment from clinical to more human and artistic.
Keely Birch, prevention of deconditioning lead, acknowledged the mental health challenges faced by patients during prolonged stays, such as boredom and isolation. She stated that this project proves creative health has a valuable place in acute care settings, with participants finding it beneficial to their overall hospital experience.
